The History section of this web site is very sparse, especially the pages from 1980, onward. With time, these pages will be flushed out with lots of photos, and the sparse text will be replaced with, ah, well - it'll be replaced. The text following 1980 comes directly from Joe Nolte. Hopefully someone out there will be "encouraged" to write me with alternate ideas about the events described...
The material on the two SST records had been 1/3 new, 1/3 from the stuff I was
writing in 1984/1985 that never got recorded, and 1/3 stuff from the early
days. I'd felt I was to some extent going through the motions, and the '89
tour had left me unsatsified.
So it was time for a change. I spent the first part of the year writing very
strange, not-necessarily-last songs, and by late spring brought brother Mike
together with brother Dave and Kristi Callan to form a four part harmony type
group that we ever-so-unimaginatively called "The Nolte Brothers with Kristi
Callan". We worked out some incredible harmony arrangements on both the
aforementioned originals, some originals from the others, and some
interestingly chosen covers. It was pretty rad, and the end result was that
we played a total of two shows for small audiences, and never recorded.
Fortunately we're all still breathing, so . . .
At the end of the year Luke, Larry and Naz called within days of each other,
just as I'd come to the conclusion that my new songs should be done by The
Last, so Kismet & Karma shook hands & I called SST . . .
